Wire Shoe Project: The Right Step

Opportunity
The perimeters for the wired shoe project were to select a shoe of significance in our lives and to recreate it using various types of wire.

Solution
I selected the right shoe of a pair of boat shoes my grandmother gave me a few years ago. It was the last material gift she gave me prior to her battle with cancer. She passed away July 6, 2012 after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. Her true and lasting gift to me was her love and her encouragement to me to keep serving the Lord. The Right Step was inspired by both gifts of the shoe and her love. It embodies the providential stride I take in faith everywhere I go. The original shoes are nearly kaput but I still have them almost as a token of what my "Mimi" meant to me and what she had intended for me to do — to serve and love people fully and wholeheartedly.

As for the technical side of the project, I plotted out points on a large sheet of newsprint, selected pieces of both copper and aluminum wire, manipulated and bent the wires according to the ploted points, and then assembled the components together. Finally, I created a wooden base with three platforms, descending into the negative space, and placed the shoe to complete the composition.
